SUMMARY:MRD Talk #1: Climate change adaptation in mountains: How to close the gap between policies and local realities?
DESCRIPTION:Despite major efforts to promote adaptation actions\, gaps between policies and local responses persist and limit effective pathways toward more resilient mountain communities. Emilie Dupuits and Graham McDowell will present their findings on these rifts and discuss their recommendations with Kevin Kinusu\, Managing Director of Africa Bioenergy Programs Limited\, and Nona Budoyan\, Head of the Climate Policy Department of the Armenian Ministry of Environment\, as well as the audience. The event is an opportunity to jointly reflect on how to make adaptation efforts work better for mountain communities. \nThe event opens the new MRD Talks series\, which is organized jointly by Mountain Research and Development (MRD) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) as part of the PRIMA project funded by Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC). \n\nRegister directly:\n\nhttps://unibe-ch.zoom.us/meeting/register/u5IoceGvrjgiHNENwK3-N2CfCx4oSOMN4Gir\n\n\nRead more:\n\nhttps://www.mrd-journal.org/?mrd-talks=climate-change-adaptation-in-mountains-how-to-close-the-gap-between-policies-and-local-realities\n\n\nRead about MRD Talks:\n\nhttps://www.mrd-journal.org/about-mrd-talks/\n\n\nRead about Mountain Research and Development:\n\nhttps://www.mrd-journal.org/

SUMMARY:Sustainable Innovation Forum 2020
DESCRIPTION:Overcoming a global health emergency and preventing the global climate emergency will require an unprecedented level of cross-sector\, cross-industry and cross-border collaboration. \nOver the last 10 years\, Climate Action has been uniting the public\, private and NGO sectors alongside the UN climate change summits by convening the largest multi-stakeholder forum at COP: The Sustainable Innovation Forum. \nEach year\, the Forum plays a key role in facilitating the connections that forge the cross sectors partnerships required to address the global climate emergency and accelerate the transition to a net-zero economy. \nIn response to the global pandemic and in an effort to fill the void left by the delayed COP26\, the 11th Sustainable Innovation Forum will be fully virtualised and broadcast live from a London-based studio creating a platform for the public and private sector to showcase continued climate action. \n\nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:1st Global Mountain Sustainability Forum
DESCRIPTION:About\nIn the epoch of Anthropocene\, where humans have a significant impact on the Earth’s geology and ecology\, the sustainability of our social-economic systems is the basic prerequisite for the long-term existence of mankind. Any pathway towards such sustainability necessarily calls for deep transformations of our society and will require complementary actions by governments\, civil society\, science\, and business (Sachs et al.\, 2019). By and large\, it remains unclear if and how respective processes of societal and institutional upheavals may be initiated and will take place. Nevertheless\, sustainability has turned into a matter of individual lifestyle and individual daily choices rooted in common values in parts of the society. \nAcknowledging the necessity of fundamental changes\, the United Nations and its member states have been developing a framework for national action and global cooperation: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the respective 17 Sustainable Development Goals. With only 10 more years left to achieve these goals\, the United Nations’ Secretary-General has raised a universal call to mobilise for a decade of global\, local and people action. At the core of this call is the need to tackle growing poverty\, empower women and girls\, and address the climate emergency. \nWithin this context\, the newly established Global Mountain Sustainability Forum (GMS Forum) conference series will discuss particular challenges concerning sustainability in mountain regions\, which also provide invaluable ecosystem services for lowlands and their populations; these are often not appropriately taken into account in policies and decision-making processes. The GMS Forum 2020 will tackle sustainability governance issues at the crossroads between international frameworks and local contributions\, focusing on the topics of tourism and natural resource management (see full conference programme here). \nThis conference takes place on October 5-6\, 2020.
