Woodwell Climate Research center is seeking a Research Associate / Postdoctoral Researcher to join our carbon market analytics group. The Research Associate / Postdoctoral Researcher will work on the development of novel approaches and tools to generate robust demand-side data and information to increase transparency and build confidence in nascent carbon markets. The project focuses on defining an operational architecture, including standards, criteria, and methods, for a global forest and agricultural carbon index and derivative rating system. The index will drive development of the ratings system, providing actionable intelligence to decision-makers in the public and private sector, with wide-ranging market, policy and research applications.
Responsibilities:
-
Lead the development of a spatially explicit global land-based carbon index and rating system.
-
Coordinate workflows and decision making as part of a diverse project team (e.g., experts in NCS, CDR, forests, soils, agriculture, economics, finance, markets, etc.) made up of Woodwell scientists, external collaborators, and a project steering committee.
-
Adapt and refine code for hierarchical index construction, time-series analysis, predictive modeling, weighting approaches, and sensitivity analysis, etc.
-
Contribute to peer-reviewed manuscripts describing analytical approaches and real-world applications.
Desired Qualifications and Experience:
-
Ph.D. or equivalent experience in data science or related discipline with knowledge and/or experience in index/rating system construction.
-
Demonstrated interest in the development of spatially explicit investment tools with applications to climate risk, ESG, etc.
-
Strong data science skills including proficiency handling large spatial (raster) data sets and applying AI/machine learning algorithms.
-
Strong mathematical and statistical background.
-
Experience with cloud-computing, parallel processing, and/or Google Earth Engine.
-
Advanced experience with R and/or Python programming language or equivalent.
-
Experience with C/C++ or comparable programming languages is desirable.
-
Working knowledge of carbon cycling/sequestration in forest and agricultural systems.
-
Superior oral and written communication skills.
-
Ability to work as a member of an established team in a fast-paced environment.
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
